German passports are issued to nationals of Germany for the purpose of international travel. A German passport is, besides the German ID card and the German Emergency Travel Document (called “Reiseausweis als Passersatz”), the only other officially recognised document that German authorities will routinely accept as proof of identity from German citizens. Besides serving as proof of identity and presumption of German nationality, they facilitate the process of securing assistance from German consular officials abroad (or other EU members in the case that a German consular facility is absent). Every German citizen is also a citizen of the European Union. The passport, along with the national identity card, allows for free rights of movement and residence in any of the states of the European Union and European Economic Area.
Since 1 November 2005, German passports have had a contactless smartcard (proximity card) chip embedded into the front cover page, in accordance with ICAO standards. The chip and antenna are not easily visually recognisable, but their presence is indicated using the ICAO biometric passport symbol at the bottom of the front cover. It carries all the data printed in the passport, including a JPEG file of the photo, protected by a digital signature.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION GERMAN PASSPORT ONLINE
The German passport contains a chip on which the finger prints of the passport holder are saved. This applies to all applicants who have reached the age of 6. It is therefore mandatory that you apply for your German passport in person at the appropriate German mission. Any passport application that is mailed in cannot be processed.
The validity of the biometric passport is 6 years for applicants under the age of 24, otherwise 10 years.
Please ensure that
- the application form is completed
- that you have the right passport photos (see photo examples and template), and that
- all the required supporting documentation is submitted
This will expedite processing. In some cases, additional information and/or documentation may be required, especially if the old passport expired several years ago.
Passport applications requiring a name declaration cannot be processed until the appropriate declaration has been submitted. It is therefore essential that you check whether or not you are required to submit a name declaration. For example, a name declaration is required if you have married since your last passport was issued and you changed your surname.
A name declaration is also required if this is the first time you are applying for a passport for your child and you and your spouse do not share the same surname. Additional information can be found on our website at:
